Canada Wants a Specific One. Are You Preparing for the Wrong One?
Confirm which PTE you need before you book
Pearson makes two PTE tests. PTE Academic is for universities. PTE Core is for Canadian immigration. If you are applying for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program, you need PTE Core. Not PTE Academic. Different format, different scoring, different purpose. Students who sit the wrong one have to start again.

What is different between them
PTE Core launched in March 2023, created specifically to meet IRCC requirements. IRCC is Canada's immigration department. The test runs roughly two hours and covers the same four skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. But the tasks, the topics, and the scoring model are built around everyday communication rather than academic language.
PTE Academic uses academic texts, university-style lectures, and formal writing tasks. A student who has spent three months drilling PTE Academic essays and summarise spoken text exercises has been preparing for something Canada's immigration system cannot accept.
Why this mistake is so easy to make
Search for 'PTE prep for Canada' and the vast majority of what you find is PTE Academic content. YouTube tutorials, coaching centres, prep books. PTE Academic has existed since 2009 and has a far larger prep library. PTE Core is newer and has less material available. That gap pulls students toward the wrong test without them realising it.
QCan I use a PTE Academic score for Canadian immigration if the score is high enough?
No. IRCC accepts PTE Core only. The scoring criteria differ, the two tests are tracked separately by Pearson, and there is no conversion or equivalency IRCC will accept. A PTE Academic score, regardless of the number, cannot be submitted to IRCC for Express Entry or a PNP application.
QCan I use PTE Core for UK or Australian university admissions?
No. PTE Core is not accepted for university admissions anywhere. If your goal is a UK or Australian university, PTE Academic is the correct test.
How to confirm you are booking the right one
On Pearson's website, the booking pages for PTE Core and PTE Academic are separate. Confirm you are selecting Core before you pay. When looking for prep material, verify that every resource is labelled specifically for PTE Core. If a resource does not say Core, assume it covers PTE Academic.
