Nine tests. Three families. Completely different purposes. Most students pick whichever name they have heard most often and start preparing. That is the wrong order. Two minutes here will save you from three months preparing for a test your destination does not even accept.

IELTS Life Skills is for UK visas only. Nothing else
A1 for spouse/partner visa. A2 for further leave to remain. B1 for British citizenship. It has no academic or immigration use outside the UK visa system. Do not book it unless one of these is your exact requirement.

These are benchmarks, not guarantees. Requirements vary by institution and change. Always verify directly with the university, employer, or government immigration site.
Myth: IELTS General is easier than IELTS Academic
Writing Task 1 differs. General is a letter, Academic is a graph. Some find the letter more natural, which is where this belief comes from. Reading and Writing Task 2 are identical. More critically: immigration score thresholds are often the same level as university requirements. Switching to General for an easier ride usually does not work the way students expect.
Myth: PTE is easier because a computer marks it
The August 2025 update added human oversight and two new task types. Respond to a Situation and Summarise Group Discussion. That require unscripted natural communication. Rehearsed templates now actively lower your score. PTE is different from IELTS, not simpler.
Myth: SAT and ACT are only for US applicants
Both are accepted at universities in Canada and a growing number of UK and European institutions. For students with strong maths, the SAT can demonstrate academic ability in a way an English proficiency test cannot. The tests are not geographically restricted.
Myth: A higher band always improves your visa outcome
Immigration routes have thresholds, not preferences. IELTS 8.5 for a visa that requires 5.5 gives you zero immigration advantage. Prepare to meet the threshold confidently. Not to exceed it by three bands.
Which tests does your destination actually accept?
Check the admissions page, government immigration site, or employer spec directly. A score from a test not on the accepted list is simply not accepted. Do not assume.
Does the test match your specific goal. Not just the category?
IELTS General is not accepted for UK university admissions. TOEFL Essentials is not accepted by all institutions that accept iBT. PTE Core is not for academic use. The variant matters as much as the brand.
Does the format suit how you work under pressure?
IELTS Speaking is with a real examiner. PTE Speaking is entirely to a computer. TOEFL iBT Speaking has no preparation window post-2026. ACT Science requires fast data reading. Pick the format that gives you the best chance. Not the most famous name.
Does the results turnaround fit your deadline?
PTE: 48 hours. IELTS computer: 3–5 days. SAT/ACT: 2–8 weeks. If you are on a tight timeline, the turnaround is part of the decision, not an afterthought.
