Worth reading before you choose a course
The most popular degrees are no longer chosen on prestige alone. In 2026, students are following the jobs, and the data backs them up. The World Economic Forum names AI and machine learning specialists, data specialists, fintech engineers, software developers and cybersecurity roles among the fastest-growing jobs to 2030. Those are almost exactly the courses international students are flooding into. Here is what they are, why they are surging, and the visa bonus that comes with them.
| Field | Why it is surging | The visa bonus |
|---|---|---|
| AI and machine learning | AI-engineer demand is up an estimated 40 to 60 per cent since 2024, and it is a top WEF fastest-growing role | On nearly every country's shortage list, so faster, better-paid visa routes |
| Data science and analytics | Among the fastest-growing and highest-paying fields worldwide | Strong post-study work demand almost everywhere |
| Cybersecurity | A WEF fastest-growing role; every organisation now needs it | Security specialists are actively recruited and sponsored |
| Software engineering | Still expanding, especially cloud and systems | IT sits on every major shortage occupation list |
| Nursing and healthcare | Chronic, worsening global shortages | One of the strongest routes to a work visa and permanent residency |
| Finance and fintech | FinTech engineers are a top WEF growth role | Global financial hubs are hiring and sponsoring |
Why these degrees travel so well
There is a reason these fields keep appearing next to the words faster visa. IT and healthcare are on the shortage occupation list of nearly every major destination, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and more. Being on that list often means lower salary thresholds, quicker processing, and a clearer path to permanent residency. You are not just picking a job; you are picking a route.
QDo I need to be a maths genius for AI or data science?
Less than you think. Strong numeracy helps, but these fields reward logical thinking, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning far more than raw genius. Plenty of successful students come from non-traditional backgrounds.
QIs it too late to switch into one of these?
Usually not. Conversion master's degrees in data, computing and cybersecurity are built for graduates from other subjects, and they are among the fastest-growing programmes universities offer.
The fastest-growing roles come from the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025, and the courses students are applying to from international education trend data.
